About Thai Foot Massage

Thai Foot Massage involves a massage of the hands, legs and feet. It originated in Thailand around 2000 years ago and is a part of traditional Thai massage.

Traditional Thai Massage has elements of Shiatsu, Acupressure, Reflexology, Chinese massage and Hatha Yoga incorporated into the massage routine.

It has been traced back to Buddhism and there are stone inscriptions on the walls of the ‘Wat Pho Temple’ in Bangkok.

Massage and other healing was taught and used in the monasteries and within the family. Temples were built with adjoining dispensaries and medical schools.

Both Thai Massage and Thai Foot Massage are holistic treatments.  Thai Massage balances the elements of the mind and body, while Thai Foot Massage stimulates the internal organs.

Thai Massage has a unique style in each area of Thailand. When people would gather together from different regions they would share their knowledge and exchange their techniques of massage.  Thailand has many agricultural workers who do a lot of physical work causing tension and soreness in their muscles, so families have traditionally taught their children the massage techniques and are still passed down through the generations today.

During a Thai Foot Massage, all parts of the foot & lower leg is included and involves stretching, massage, stimulating reflex points and follows the Thai energy lines (Sen).  Applying pressure to stimulate the reflexes, nerve connections and energy pathways will extend from the feet to the rest of the body encouraging homeostasis.

Thai foot massage concentrates on the ten sen lines that flow through the body (there are said to be 72,000 energy lines in existence in the body.)

Whilst meridians concentrate on the organs within the meridian and increasing the flow of energy to that organ, the sen lines concentrate on the flow of energy connected to the mind, body and spirit and follow the form of the body.  The flow of the sen lines represents the body’s vital energy forces and serves to stimulate and control the physical, emotional and mental processes.  When these sen lines are blocked it causes disharmony within the body.
